Word from the Pastor - February 2012

For the next 6 weeks we will be asking the question "are you a Fan or a Follower" and what each term means. It's really a question of commitment and it begins at a personal level. Commitment comes in various shapes and sizes because we are all at different levels of maturity as believers. When Jesus spoke in Luke 9:23, about "denying oneself and taking up his cross daily", He wasn't referring to the gold one around your neck or the 'honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker. Let's say a solid 8 foot cross made of oak was strapped across your shoulder blades. And let's also say carrying your cross was your lifeline. But as you constantly carried this awkward piece of lumber, you realize it's painful, cumbersome, and never mind how ridiculous you look. Literally, it would be a "pain". Everybody sees your commitment to 'living'. They'd see you try to fit it in your car or on the bus, or take it to Starbuck's, or at the movies. It would serve as a constant reminder of the choice you made so that you could live. Would you cut it down to make it more comfortable? Would you carry it only half a day to ease the load? Or would you decide not to bother and just put it down? Christ reminds us that His choice to die on the cross was done wholeheartedly because He loved us. His Father didn't make Him go, He willingly went. Our response to commit to follow and obey Him should also be a response of love.
